Our Story

In 1994 two prominent justices, Ahmed Muizzu and Husnu Al-Suood left their respective positions on the bench as chief justices of the Maldivian Criminal Court and Civil Court to establish a full-service law firm – Muizzu, Suood & Co. The practice initially began with a focus on litigation and quickly became a leader in both the civil and criminal litigation space. Shortly after his appointment as Prosecutor General for the state, Ahmed Muizzu left the firm. Operating under its new moniker, Suood & Anwar LLP, the next decade witnessed years of refocusing within the firm resulting in exponential growth in its corporate and commercial practice resulting in the firm becoming the leading practice for corporate and commercial work. As Suood & Anwar LLP, the firm expanded its practice to tax advisory and financial services. Over the next decade, the firm earned a high standing for its unparalleled service – becoming the leading full-service law firm in Maldives. The litigation practice started focusing on pro-bono matters and resolved to contribute to the promotion of awareness in society in relation concepts of law with practitioners at the firm publishing the presently leading textbooks in relation to contract law, property law, law of evidence, and other areas. His concerted efforts led to our then managing partner being appointed to the Supreme Court bench. In late 2019 we became S&A Lawyers LLP. Our lawyers are consistently ranked amongst the top tier of the Maldives with clients including key government agencies, international financial institutions, several multinational corporations, and some of the biggest corporations in Maldivian business.
